URL shorteners

Shoreners are a great way to cut down the space needed to accomodate a long URL and or page name. There are many on the market to choose from and this week I’ve been reviewing carefully a number of sites and found surprisingly that some of their strongest backlinks (albeit no follow) ones came from URL shortener sites!

I have a theory that while not counting as part of the Search Rankings of a site directly they contribute indirectly as part of the number of referring domain names.

Anyway to cut a long story short, (sorry couldn’t resist the pun) I’ve been trying some of them out. There are maybe 50 around the web it seems but the most popular are the ones to try as they are popular because they are good and associated with a strong brand already, which then brings, trust and credibilty and all that other good stuff!

Next step is to monitor Google Webmaster Tools to see if these links show up. I am pretty sure it works, though of course its just a single link when a site needs 100’s or even 1,000’s to perform but small steps etc. Progress will not be all that fast, but I am hopeful that in a few months, I’ll start to see my links appearing around the web in this shorter / shortened manner or fashion.

Long domain names, then even longer urls with all your keyword descriptions in doesn’t need to be clunky anymore!
